Seeing Charles II’s illegitimate line in a family tree format really highlights just how many mistresses and children he had while Queen Catherine was completely sidelined.

All of Charles’ recognised offspring were given titles, wealth and good marriages within the aristocracy. Note also the surnames that many of the children were given: FitzRoy means ‘son of king’ and FitzCharles, of course, ‘son of Charles’. There was no doubt whose children they were!
